POP UP ARTIST | ON THE BRICKS: BARB SISTAK BAUR | Metal Art (Vintage License Plates)
ONE NIGHT ONLY | Saturday, August 2, 6-9pm
POP UP SHOW | ON THE BRICKS
BARB SISTAK BAUR, Metal Artist
Barb's artistic journey has been via a circuitous route and this is often reflected in her artwork. She began studying drawing on her own from books, working on them late at night while raising her family. She later began more formal instruction with valued instructors and mentors at Columbia College in Missouri.
Barb uses unique materials to explore her parallel lines of inquiry: flags, abstraction, and Route 66… and not necessarily in that order. “My husband and I operate an online business from Mundelein, IL, serving collectors of old vintage license plates,” says Barb. “We have tens of thousands of old license plates in our business space, which is also home to my studio, and also where I source much of my art material.” Her themes and materials have clear connections to each other.
“Nothing says ‘America’ quite like the automobile, so license plates are apt for commentary on our country,” says Barb. “I create my American flag pieces in response to the disruptive conflicts between our political parties. And, old US Route 66 conjures the travel ideal of adventure, freedom and exploration. Often rusty and worn, my works nostalgically peer back at those days gone by.”
Her abstract sculptural works bring pieces together to form a cohesive composition, creating a sense of calm and restorative peace. Some form 3-D cubes, others are layered to create more linear shapes.
We are excited to welcome Barb to the Blue Moon in this special POP UP SHOW — ONE NIGHT ONLY at the Blue Moon!

GROUP EXHIBITION: FUSEDChicago, Encaustics
ARTISTIC DIALOGUES by FUSEDChicago Artists
Artistic Dialogues is meant to illustrate the expansive artistic possibilities the encaustic medium can have. Artists were asked to submit two pieces that speak to each other using two different encaustic techniques (e.g., painting, accretion, photo transfer, monotype, etc). The result will be two-fold, a dialogue between the artist and the viewer and a dialogue between the two art pieces. The two pieces can be interpreted as standalone or a diptych.
FUSEDChicago is an organization of artists in the Midwest who share an interest in encaustic, a method of making art using pigmented wax fused to a surface by heat.
FUSEDChicago artists are painters, sculptors, printmakers, and photographers who bring contemporary sensibilities to their art and use modern technology in creating their work. Many members are inspired by the qualities of wax itself - the brilliance of its colors, its tactility and malleability, the luminescence of wax layers, and the textural possibilities of its surface.
PARTICIPATING ARTISTS: Helen Dannelly, Bob Fesser, Paula Hiller, Laura LaRue, Cindy Lesperance, Jane Michalski, Carol L. Myers, Michele Thrane, and Neli Tzintzeva.
Come experience a dynamic & exciting group exhibition featuring new works from the esteemed FUSEDChicago Artists!

GUEST ARTIST: CANVAS JAZZ by Jan Schrader | Abstract Paintings
CANVAS JAZZ by Jan Schrader | Abstract Paintings
Jan’s approach to painting is very straightforward. He simply attempts to create beautiful, unique art to enhance both the surroundings and lives of his viewers. His paintings reflect three major influences. The first is Mid-Century and Contemporary Architecture for its clean lines, originality, and non-conformity. The second is Asian art, particularly the Zen minimalism, fully compatible and complimentary to Mid-Century design.
Jan says: “So why abstract art? I’m a huge jazz fan, my third influence. To me, abstract art is jazz on canvas. I call it Canvas Jazz. Like jazz, abstract art is limitless, without boundaries; it is free form, and open for creative riffs. I often start with a very basic plan or none at all and improvise as I go along. Jazz, baby!”
Jan uses heavy textures combined with metallic and high gloss paints. The results are interesting surfaces that change in appearance as the room lighting changes throughout the day creating interest, conversation and enjoyment.
Exhibition Dates: June 21-July 19
Open Saturdays 1-4pm
Jan will present an informal Artist Talk about his art at the gallery on July 12 during gallery hours.

GUEST ARTIST: BEYOND THE OBVIOUS by Michelle O’Connor | Abstract Paintings
BEYOND THE OBVIOUS | Abstract Paintings by Michelle O’Connor
Opening Reception: Saturday, May 10, 6-9pm
Exhibition Dates: May 10-May 31
“Beyond the Obvious” invites viewers into a layered visual experience—one that challenges perception, embraces ambiguity, and opens a portal to deeper reflection. This body of work tells stories through the language of texture, shape, energy, and intuition. Michelle's abstract, expressive compositions explore the space where the visible and invisible intersect—where what we know meets what we feel, what we remember, and what we cannot fully name.
Grounded in rich physical texture, Michelle's work nods to the material world and the constructed systems that shape our understanding of reality—cultural norms, identities, and inherited beliefs. Yet woven through these elements are ephemeral threads of frequency, emotion, memory, and transformation. Says Michelle: "I aim to make the intangible visible, to represent the energetic undercurrents of our shared human experience."
This exhibition reflects a personal and collective call to consciousness. In a world that often favors clarity, stability, and certainty, “Beyond the Obvious” creates space for curiosity, courage, and multiple truths. It is an invitation to question long-held perceptions and to explore the transformative power of shifting perspective.

Figure Drawing Sale by Matthew Padilla
NEW: Figure Drawings by Matthew Padilla | Now Available for Purchase
Figure drawing plays a central role in Matthew’s art practice as he has always viewed it as a necessary skill in order to paint as he wants to. There is also an academic aspect which he likes — proportion, perspective, and anatomy all play a role. Matthew feels the human figure is perhaps the most compelling subject matter of all, at least for him.
“When I am able to complete a figure drawing to my liking, one that really flows and captures what I want to say, I feel a sense of accomplishment because drawing the figure is rife with challenge; misdrawn figures feel wrong, and misdrawing the figure is easy. Some drawings feel, to me, as though they would pair well with text, and so I write on them, and much of what I write comes to me on the spot. Nearly every day that I work in the studio I start off with figure drawing as it allows me to transition well to other work. It would be hard to overstate the importance of figure drawing to me and I expect it will always play a strong role in my life as a practicing artist.”

ON THE BRICKS | POP-UP GUEST ARTIST: DAVID BELLE — One Night Only
Photographs by David Belle
Opening Reception — Saturday, August 24, 6-9pm
David will be showing photographs from his portfolio of work titled Analog Days/Carousel Memories.
In these photographs David used a butane torch on the slide mount of 35mm chrome slides. The photographs are from an archive of recent work where David physically deconstructed the original, tangible, analog photographic 35mm chrome slide and then reconstructed the photo into a digital output. The photo was then mounted on archival Japanese handmade paper. The titles of the photographs in this collection are "lyric bytes" from the Paul Simon songbook.

GUEST ARTIST: MARCIA BIASIELLO | Paintings as Love Poems
Marcia Biaisiello: Summer of 24 | Aquatic Love Poems | Acrylic Paintings
Marcia Biasiello sees her images as visual narratives and love poems depicting pivotal moments where what happens before, after, and even during is open with possibility. She thinks of the frame as drawing a line around an otherwise normal environment and otherwise uneventful moment. By constraining the space and loading it with extremes, a next step seems inevitable, from choice not constraint. The figures’ interactions—him and her, him and the past, her and the future—overlay the present moment to make any next move possible. She doesn’t know what each figure presented in her paintings will do next and therefore invites the viewer to imagine.
Opening Reception August 24 | 6-9pm
On view through September 22. Open weekends 1-4pm.
